Methodology

We did our project after school on the 30 / 01 / 12 in school and we had interviewed 10 teachers from the age of 20 - 60 and we asked them our survey questions and we wrote down their view points about the low birthrate in Singapore .

Here are some questions we asked :
1. What is your age ? Had you married ? What is your occupation ? What is your age married ?

2. Do you have any children ?
If have , how many do you have ?
If not , how many do you want ?
If you don't want any children , why ?
How many children do you want ?
Why you want only that number of children ?
Why you don't want having more than 1-2 children ?
Why do you think people in Singapore are not giving birth ?

3. What do you think can happen if Singapore continues to have a low birthrate ?

4. What do you think the government can do to encourage people to give birth to more children ?

Lastly , we thanks them for their view points and their precious time to take the survey .

Result & Analysis

Out of the 10 Peicai staff we had interviewed , 2 were married and 8 were single . The 2 staff who were married has got 1 or 2 children , but 1 of them is still planning to have 1 or 2 children more . The 8 people who were single are intending to get married but have not found a suitable partner .

Out of the 2 staff who were married , 1 of them aged between 50's to 60's have 2 children said that during the olden days , government said that they have to stop at 2 children and it is expensive to raise children up those days . The other staff who is aged between 20's to 30's have 1 children but wants to have 3 children . She doesn't wants to have more children because their house is too small , their age is growing older and it is expensive to raise more than 3 children .

The 8 staff who were single are willing to have 2 to 3 children when they get married, because they thinks children are adorable and makes homes lively so they can have some company . They doesn't want to have more children because they are afraid that they could not afford to bring them up . And nowadays , bringing up children is expensive and people are working harder to earn more money to support their families . Some were saying it is painful for the women to give birth to more childen and some does not have enough time to take care their children .

The government is so concern about low birthrate because they are not able to sustain and need of more foreign talents , ageing population , not enough manpower to serve the country and decrease of population .

Some people suggested that the government should give more financial support , housing , more benefits , give more money bonus for giving birth , tax break , allow flexible working hours , job benefits and paternal leave to encourage more people to give birth to more children .

Conclusion

In conclusion , we found out that young couples don't want to have more than 3 children as bringing up children are expensive and takes a lot of time taking care of them .

Some problem we faced is that in the people that we had interviewed , some are sensitive to answering the question and some had difficulties answering the question . In order to make it easier for them to answer , we changed the questions easier for them to answer .

Reflections

Eileen :

I felt that I've been more responsible as I was given a job to type out all the result after my group members have interviewed the 10 Peicai staff . Joslyn and Xuan Xin take turns to interview people while Li Zhen wrote down the results . I enjoyed doing this project because I get to learn a lot of things especially Teamwork because we need to communicate well to finish this project .

Joslyn :

I enjoyed and learned lots of things in this project like asking the teachers of their points of view . Xuan Xin and I take turns to interview the teachers while Li Zhen help out by writing the points of view that the teachers had said and Eileen also help out by writing the blog . I felt less confident when I was starting to ask the teachers questions but slowly I try more times and I had much more confident in myself now .

Xuan Xin :

I enjoyed and learned quite a lot of things through this project . Joslyn and me get to takes turns to ask questions . We get to know others people views .While we were asking questions , Li Zhen help us to take down the answers . At first we were shy to ask , but as we slowly ask the teachers our confident just build up and now I am more confident in myself !

Li Zhen :

I was given the job to write about the answers of the people interviewed . While the other group members was the one doing the speaking . It was a good experience as we get to know more about the society . We had no confidence at first but slowly the confidence is building up and that is how we completed the interview .
